Great. Is it a two piece or all together. And is this your first attempt at spandex sewing? Or just using s Serger?

Thanks! I've "tried" sewing spandex before with a regualr machine, but never had good results at all.
This is my very first serger. I'm literally teaching myself. The suit is two pieces. I decided to attach the briefs to the bottom of the shirt and make it so that it buttons in the crotch. I had to make my own pattern using old underamour shirts layed flat and traced on paper grocery bags. The stripes are made from red and white spandex fabric rectangles, sewn together horizontally. It took some seriously precise measuring, pinning and sewing, but I got them all lined up evenly in front and back...and attached to the shirt with no sags. The serger made it a lot easier. Trying this in a regular machine would have been a disaster. I got the gloves done and will post pics later today. |

That's a good effort and self taught serger skills-cool.
The stripes seem to be taking up more surface area than the blue. also if you raise the blue on the sleeves say that it cuts into your bicep and so it matches edge of the blue (at the above suggested height) I think the overall effect would be even better than what you already have

wow brother thats great, i can see where frank is saying about the blue being kind of taken up, and the sleeves should cut your tricep in half... but its very
VERY good and i cant wait to see it finished, what are you thinking for the mask? gloves and boots, and shield also?

Thanks for the suggestions. I do see what you mean. I'll see if I can make some adjustments. Fortunately the fabric is very stretchy, so there is a bit of
"play" in it. It may be as simple as making sure keep the shirt pulled down more...and not stretching the sleeves all the way down to my
wrists....thereby letting the blue part ride higher on my biceps a bit. I think I will need to wear the belt a tad on the high side, as a result. But that
overall look may be more balanced.
Thanks again for the feedback. Much appreciated. = Chris |

Cowl! Try doing gloves in a serger. The machine wants to eat fabric with its slicing blade. Ends up being chewed to pieces. But hand sewing is not a personal
strength.

Another Pic Added - cowl, gloves, booties | ||
|
Hey Guys Work continues on my Cap suit. Thanks for your helpful suggestions and feedback. I made some adjustments to the blue/chest area and sleeves to give it better proportion. Here's another IN PROGRESS pic, with the cowl, belt, spandex gloves and spandex booties. I haven't attached the belt loops or the wings on the cowl yet. How's it look? -- Chris

Great job, the cowl looks really good. There's an easy way to make the boot flaps if you choose to do so, there's a "Cap America boot"
tutorial in the Library section of this forum, by me of course.

Looking very good. I'm impressed by that cowl. The eye holes are nice and big and from afar it looks like it fits your head well. DId you cut ear openings
on the side? Would love to see a closer shot of the cowl and how it fits around your neck - both are difficult to do, but this looks like you nailed it. The
belt looks good as do the straight lines of the stripes and the star looks balanced as well. Is the blue fabric a stretch velour or just regular spandex? I
hope you go for the cavalier like boot with the flaps and the wider gauntlet gloves. Now what about that shield?

Yeah, for a fabric cowl, that looks great.
I'd suggest adding some leather gloves and boots though, they really finish a Cap cossie off well.
...It looks like a fist. It's so disturbing.

Here's the shield too! | ||
|
Hey Guys...
The blue part of the suit is actually milliskin weight spandex, but it does look velvety in the pic. The rest is regular smimsuit/dancewear weight spandex. By popular demand, here's a shot with the shield! It's still in progress, too! I'm going with a darker blue center. I was at a party, staring at one of those enormous veggie party dip platters and there it was. Piled high with carrot and celery sticks and a vat of ranch dressing. The thick round aluminum foil party platter from Smart & Final was the base for my shield. Dip anyone? - Chris |

Looks great man! My personal preference would be for a larger shield, but if you're happy that's what counts.

Yes. The shield does seem a bit small now that I see it in a photo with the full suit. The good news is that it is very lightweight. And I can thow it like Cap
does and it gets some good air and distance! LOL!
Also, one thing I've learned about working with milliskin weight spandex is that it does have its pros and cons. PROS & CONS OF MILLISKIN WEIGHT SPANDEX PROS: Very stretchy, but still fairly firm; very forgiving when stitches turn out wavy; doesn't get bulky when layered; shows off muscularity and body shape well; cool irridescent/velvet effect under certain light, breaths very well; easily hand stitched CONS: Gets thin when pulled at its tightest; can show imperfections of material underneath (example: the seams or bumps in a hard shell cowl); not the most ideal material for making a cowl with a harder shell underneath. |

That actually looks great for a party tray! It's not too far off from the licensed Cap shields that Rubies makes, and those are something like $30 and made
of thin, thin plastic. I think if you can do that, you could definitely do what a lot of us have done and use a snow saucer, which is steel, not very heavy,
and already comes in red. Costs about $30, then you just paint and add your straps to the inside, all of which can be done for no more than $20. Just something
to consider! I think there is even a tutorial on it in the Library section of the LOH.

musclebuzz wrote: Cool! I've thought of using those trays for the same reason! Somebody needs to toss a shield around on stage at Comicon or another masquerade. If you can throw a frizbee, couldn't you just as well hit the RedSkull or Baron Zemo? |
